To provide one brief note of clarification: <BR/><BR/>You objected to the Liberian president having said, "We became the first independent Republic in Africa," writing, "I would expect a 'Harvard educated' person to know better but Ethiopia was a state before Liberia."<BR/><BR/>You're right--and there were other states as well, clearly (depending on one's definition of "state"). <BR/><BR/>But the Liberian president said "independent republic," and while I understand you're objecting to the "independent" part (given that Ethiopia wasn't conquered until the 20th century, and then only briefly), Ethiopia was not a republic until the Marxist period. Until then, it was a monarchy.<BR/><BR/>I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Garvey's denunciation of Haile Selassie (http://www.jamaicans.com/culture/rasta/MarcusGarveyeditorial.shtml), Brother.
